Associate Spotlight: Laura Latorre
Here at Musselman Hotels we’re starting a new series where we will feature some of our top associates from each of our properties. We decided to highlight our Associate of the Year for 2015 Laura Latorre. She is a Housekeeping Supervisor at the Louisville Marriott East.
Tell us a little about yourself… Where are you from? What do you like to do outside work? How did you end up in the Hospitality industry? When did you join the Louisville Marriott East team? Etc..
I am from Mexico and have been living in Louisville for 9 years. It was hard the first few year in the US because my children were still living in Mexico. They are here now. I have two girls who are 15 and 14 years old and one boy who is 12. When I am not at work I just like to spend time with my kids. We go to the park, out to restaurants just spend time together.
What was your background (School and/or Work) or experience before joining Musselman Hotels at the Louisville Marriott East?
I used to work at Golden Corral, the restaurant and at other hotels including the Marriott Downtown, Crown Plaza and Holiday Inn. I was looking for a part time job in the afternoons and knew the current Executive Housekeeper, Omar Sollano, and he said he had availability in Laundry so I started working here.
Did you know anything about hotels and the hospitality industry before starting with us?
Yes I have worked in other hotels before this one.
So what was the learning curve like and how is Musselman Hotels different from other places and/or hotels you have worked in?
Musselman takes care of its employees. They have appreciation events and many benefits. I have good memories with the previous Executive Housekeeper and have been given opportunities to grow and a chance to improve my English.
Have you received any awards/recognition since joining the company? If so what did that mean for you?
I have won Associate of the Quarter and last year I won Associate of the Year. I was very surprised to win. I thought it was a joke at first but when I realized it was real I thought it was nice to be recognized. Not just to get something but for the company to thank me for everyday work.
What types of support do you receive from management and other team members?
We are a team and I get opportunities to learn new things.
How have your duties changed over time?
They have changed a lot because I started as a laundry attendant. I first came here for the money but I am here now because I like it and the job gives me more motivation to keep growing. I am living proof that if you want something you can make it happen!
What is the most interesting challenge you have been faced with at the Louisville Marriott East and how did you handle it?
Our biggest challenge is that we are understaffed but team works together to make it happen.
What is your favorite thing about your position?
I get to meet new people, the professional and personal relationships with the team. I just like meeting new people.
If you had to choose one motto and/or saying you live by, what would it be?
“If you think that I can’t do it, come over, have a seat and watch me how I prove you wrong”
Where do you see yourself in 5 years?
To be back home in Mexico but if not have my own business here to have more time with my family.
