Tell us a little about yourself…Where are you from? What do you like to do outside work? How did you end up in the hospitality industry? When did you join the Hilton Garden Inn Airport team? Etc…
I’m from Sadieville, KY. I started in the hospitality industry when my sister got me a job at the Hilton Garden Inn in Georgetown, KY after high school. I moved to Louisville in 2015 to go to school at the University of Louisville and transferred to the SDFAH property. Outside of work, I am a full time student so I stay very busy. I do try to make time for friends, family and enjoy living in the ‘ville (which I love very much).
What was your background (school and/or work) or experience before joining Musselman Hotels at the Hilton Garden Inn Airport?
In high school, I worked at a local catering company and after I worked at the HGI in Georgetown.
Did you know anything about hotels and the hospitality industry before starting with us?
Yes. Even though my previous property was smaller, I learned a lot about hospitality and developed a lot of my customer service skills.
So what was the learning curve like and how is Musselman Hotels different from other places and/or hotels you have worked in?
The major difference for me was the size. Here, there are more guests, more employees, more leadership and it all helps to keep things running smoothly. It’s definitely busier, but much less stressful with a whole team behind you helping out, answering questions and sharing the workload.
Have received any awards/recognition since joining the company? If so, what did that mean for you?
I have! This year I received employee of the year at the Hilton Garden Inn Airport property and also associate of the year for Musselman. Being acknowledged for the work I put in really makes me feel like I have my life together!
What types of support do you receive from management and other team members?
I’ve never felt embarrassed for asking questions at this property. Everyone I work with and for is willing to make themselves available to help when you need them. It really is a team mentality, and that makes working at Musselman properties much more enjoyable. I think the guests as well can feel the positivity.
How have your duties at the Hilton Garden Inn Airport changed over time?
I have only been at the property for a year and a half, and I have been a Front Desk Agent the whole time.
What is the most interesting challenge you have been faced with at the Hilton Garden Inn Airport and how did you handle it?
The most interesting challenge for me has been how to deal with angry guests. Mostly, I’ve learned to stay calm and listen. Most people just want to be able to express why they’re upset.
What is your favorite thing about your position?
I get to set the tone for a guest’s stay. I try to be personable and polite when a guest comes in to match the excellent service they will receive after leaving the front desk.
What is your favorite thing to do outside of work?
I enjoy spending time with my friends and enjoying all the restaurants, museums, parks and festivals that Louisville has to offer. I also enjoy spending time with my cat who is currently learning how to walk with a leash.
If you had to choose one motto and/or saying you live by what would it be?
“If we’re not meant to have midnight snacks, why is there a light in the fridge?”
Where do you see yourself in 5 years?
In five years I will be finishing my graduate program in speech pathology, and paying back all my student loans.
